HEART OF THE RACE, Master Mechanics of the Mille Miglia
HEART OF THE RACE, Master Mechanics of the Mille Miglia is a photographic museum exhibition by E.A. KAHANE that pays tribute to the often unseen master mechanics who make the historic Mille Miglia possible. Through a combination of portraits and documentary images captured during the race, the project shifts attention away from the celebrated cars to the people whose skill, endurance, and creativity keep them running. The exhibition is rooted in Kahane’s multi year, first hand engagement with the Mille Miglia (2021–2024), including her direct participation in the race, and highlights mechanics from Brescia and from across the world, emphasizing their cultural, historical, and human significance within this iconic motorsport event.
COME JOIN THE PARADE!!
For over 25 years, New Yorker E.A. KAHANE has photographed the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade from her third-floor apartment window on Central Park West at 64th Street. From this special vantage point, Kahane is able to capture with her camera an unrestricted view of the parade as it passes by her window. Her bold and beautiful images document every aspect of the festivities, including the clowns, Broadway stars, floats, marching bands, cheerleaders, cheering spectators, and the biggest stars of them all-the larger-than-life balloons of our favorite characters from TV and film.
FRONT ROW SEAT, The Most Beautiful Race in the World
On the occasion of the 40th edition of the historic Mille Miglia, E.A. KAHANE held a photo exhibition at the Museo Mille Miglia in Brescia, Italy, in 2022. FRONT ROW SEAT became a large-scale photographic installation in the courtyard of the museum. E.A. KAHANE took the photographs in 2021 when her son and husband participated in the race. In 2023, she returned to participate with a group of five other women and to install this rigorous exhibition.
The Flag Project
An open call was held from February 8-26, 2021, inviting photographers to submit images for consideration for The Flag Project. E.A. KAHANE’s image from I LOVE A PARADE! was selected by Chris Boot, who was then Executive Director of the Aperture Foundation. The exhibition also featured such esteemed photographers as Renee Cox, Roe Ethridge, Nan Goldin, Ryan McGinley, and Tyler Mitchell. Each selected photograph was printed on an 8-foot by 5-foot flag and on view from March 27- April 30, 2021.
We Need a Parade!
E.A. KAHANE was the mastermind behind an expansive free outdoor installation at the Historic Newport Town Spring in Newport, Rhode Island. Created in direct response to the COVID-19 pandemic and presented before vaccines were available, the installation took place entirely outdoors, when public life was limited, and people could only be seen gathering safely outside. The images below show various stages of the site, which was completely transformed from its original state. Grass was planted, and a path was created, allowing visitors to walk through the space dynamically. The installation follows the old adage, “if you build it, they will come,” and they did. Visitors, wearing masks, experienced the site and shared images on social media. Welcoming friends both old and new, Kahane was present for most opening hours, sharing stories with those who remembered the 2016 parade. The exhibition provided an opportunity to connect, not in the same way as the original parade, but in a new and equally personal way.

HOME: A Lens on Israel
Seven photographers traveled to Israel under the auspices of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (“The Joint”). Because of the unique relationship between the state of Israel and The Joint, they were afforded access to places that were not otherwise accessible to the public. The point of the exhibition was to share the artists’ visual experiences and to showcase the population diversity of Israel. Most Americans know only of Israel’s conflicts and wars. The photographers learned a great deal about the state’s and the Joint’s support of the many vulnerable communities, particularly the elderly, handicapped, and youth at risk. The images from the exhibition were donated by the artists to the archive of the JDC.
Lotus Still-Life
From E.A. KAHANE: “Taking still life images has long been a passion of mine. The Lotus Still Life series features pond flowers from my Japanese garden, photographed in 2017. Set within an Arts & Crafts interior, the Japanese ceramic vases with silver inlay sit atop an antique American wicker table with a copper top, whose reflective surface lends the images a soft, dreamy quality. These floral portraits were created for the summer season in Newport, Rhode Island.” These photographs were included in the exhibition “Flower Power”, on view at Jessica Hagen Fine Art in the Summer of 2021. The artist is currently using these floral images as the basis for lush, decorative rugs, which are being produced in Brescia, Italy. DECORATIVE RUGS INSTALLATION IMAGES ARE FROM BRESCIA, IT, and NEWPORT, RI
FROM A PRIVATE COLLECTION
Personal favorites of the artist, reflections of her world. Curated and created for private homes, various years, and dimensions. This was E.A. KAHANE’S first formal exhibition at Jessica Hagen Fine Art in 2017. Some editions are still available. Please contact E.A. KAHANE for inquiries.
AHRC: Preschool Portraits
“As a longtime supporter of AHRC, NYC,” states E.A. KAHANE, “I spent many years as co-chair for their annual fundraiser, a trustee for over 10 years, and the first woman recipient of the Anthony M. Fisher Humanitarian Award. Over the years, I have visited the preschool many times and learned how important it is to start the education of a special needs person as early as possible. I was originally invited to photograph one of the students who struck a chord with its Principal. That one visit blossomed into my photographing all 160 of their students with varying degrees of disability. I felt compelled to include every child.” These photographs were exhibited as part of AHRC's Gala, Special Night for Special Children, 2016. All photographs ©E.A KAHANE
I Love a Parade!
A collection of parade photographs from around the world. From the 4th of July in Sun Valley to St. Patrick's Day in New York City, these photographs offer an intimate viewpoint of parades from a first-person perspective. E.A. KAHANE captured moments of pure joy that come with cheering and celebration.
Wigstock
Shot on film in 1995, before the iPhone phenomenon, an actual 35m camera would capture the full attention of the subjects. Working with natural light, capturing the Queer community’s voguing moments, spectacular costuming and personal expression as they celebrated NYC’s downtown annual “Wigstock” event. I resurrected this series from my archive in honor of the 50th Anniversary of Stonewall in 2019. (Negatives scanned and prints made digitally). All photographs ©E.A KAHANE
